IT Employees Restless and Ready to Move On

According to a recent survey conducted by online giant CareerBuilder.com, one in five IT workers do not like their current jobs and nearly a third claim that they’ll find a new job in 2006.

The primary reasons given by IT employees for disliking or being unhappy with their current employment were unmanageable workloads, insufficient pay and ineffective leadership. The report surveyed 115 information technology workers in November and December of 2005.

Rosemary Haefner, VP of human resources at CareerBuilder.com noted that IT is one of the top areas hiring managers say they will be recruiting for in 2006. With the labor market becoming more competitive, hiring managers may need to rethink their recruitment and retention strategies.

More than 60% of workers surveyed claimed that their workload had increased during the last six months and almost half noted that their workload was unmanageable. Almost one in three claimed that they were unhappy with the imbalance between work and home life they were experiencing.

Further, 38% of IT workers said that they didn’t like the way their companies were managed and led, with 25% dissatisfied with their direct supervisors.

Overall, dissatisfaction among IT employees offers opportunities for staffing firms as they rush to meet client needs for both temporary and fill-in IT employees as well as permanent placements.
