University of South Florida
Reaching consensus within large public universities and organizations may take longer than anticipated; committees are formed, reviews conducted, and input from all corners must be sought before progress can be made. Recent accomplishments at the University of South Florida in Tampa Bay are truly extraordinary: They designed, created, and launched a free diversity equity and inclusion (DEI) online certificate program within six months! USF’s Muma College of Business offered this seven-week course, entitled Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the Workplace, consisting of seven two-hour online modules over seven weeks. Discussion topics covered topics including emotional intelligence, stereotypes and biases, as well as recruitment and retention strategies in corporate environments. Each module ended with a quiz; upon successful completion of each module participants received both a digital certificate from USF as well as a Credly badge to display on LinkedIn.
The course curriculum began as an outcome of an MBA class Mootoo attended on emotional intelligence, prompting her to create a course to help people better navigate American workplace environments that are sometimes perilous for women and blacks. Following her initial outline, it was expanded upon by experts from both USF and beyond such as Tampa Bay Lightning representatives as well as global manufacturing services company Jabil. Both organizations helped shape its shape as well as recruit faculty and guest speakers for weekly sessions.
This seven-week program demonstrated how people could enhance their workplaces by addressing equity issues and cultivating inclusivity. Intended to educate human resources professionals, C-suite leaders, business managers, community and educational leaders as well as participants of diverse races, religions, ages, genders and sexual orientations as well as persons with disabilities in how diverse workforces could help companies develop novel business practices, increase revenue and productivity.
The University of South Florida recently joined forces with Credly, a premier provider of digital credentials. The two entities shared a mutual commitment to helping learners develop skills and showcase knowledge; throughout this program learners watched live-recorded lectures, participated in weekly chats/Twitter conversations, passed quizzes to earn digital badges/certifications and earned digital credentials/badges as part of an innovative educational initiative.
American Management Association
The American Management Association (AMA) is a professional organization offering training and certification to managers. Through courses focused on leadership, teamwork, diversity and inclusion, and organizational development the AMA can help managers become better leaders, build more diverse workplaces, develop self-awareness and maximize potential – all within an interactive program which includes self-assessment quizzes to test understanding as well as course materials to master these topics quickly and easily.
Diversity and Inclusion for Practitioners provides students with the skills they need to build inclusive work environments, including discussing unconscious bias, microaggressions, cultural competence and cultural competency issues. The course runs once every four weeks for four weeks – live 90-minute virtual sessions are provided every week (recordings will also be sent out afterwards) making this course ideal for HR professionals or anyone aspiring to become DEI Champions.
Diversity is integral to business success. A diverse workforce is more productive and innovative, attracts top talent more easily, fosters belongingness among employees, and strengthens corporate cultures of inclusion – yet many businesses lack the tools needed to implement change. With that in mind, AMA’s Diversity Certification Program can assist your organization in creating an inclusive culture while yielding tangible results.
